Ghana
Our first project in Ghana is situated in a deprived rural area of Ga-district near Nsawam. The population there are mostly subsistence farmers who farm cassava, yam, pineapple, palm oil and other agricultural product. Most of them are landless and often hired for low wage to work on large commercial plantations which sprang up in the last few years. Many families still live in mud huts with no access to electricity or water. Since 2007 Humanitas Africa has also partnered with Queenn Hawa Foundation which runs a day-care centre and a school in Akim Achiase village in the Eastern Region of Ghana. Children enrolled into our programme come from several rural communities where they attend local primary schools.
Compulsory schooling in Ghana is nine years:
Six years Primary School and three years of Junior High School. At the end of the Junior High School children have to sit BECE (Basic Education Certificate Examination). Those who pass get the Basic Education Certificate which will pave their way to advance their education or to the Ghana job market.
Students who pass BECE successfully and fulfil all our requirements can continue their education at a secondary school. Senior Secondary School is for three years. In the final year, students sit the WASEC exam. Click here for more information on our scholarship programme.
English is the official language in Ghana. Therefore children have to start learning it in kindergarten. However, children in the rural areas use their native languages on daily basis and most of them don’t have a good command of English until their final years in Junior High School. One of the compulsory subjects is also the native language of the area.
